Adyen Picks Wordsmith to Consolidate Legal and Compliance AI

Adyen has selected Wordsmith as its legal AI platform, replacing a tool built primarily for law firms with one designed for the broader set of teams managing legal, regulatory and compliance risk. The Amsterdam-based payments company, which holds banking licences in the EU, the UK and the US, ran a pilot across Legal, Regulatory, Compliance, Risk, Internal Control and Procurement before committing, with Internal Audit slated to join as the rollout continues.

The move marks a shift in how regulated enterprises evaluate legal AI. Adyen did not describe its prior arrangement as a failure; it concluded that software optimised for outside counsel workflows could not serve risk functions operating inside a fast-moving business. That distinction is becoming central to enterprise legal buying, where platform breadth increasingly outweighs depth in any single practice area.

Adyen's requirements point to what large buyers now demand: a consolidated intake channel to replace roughly twenty regional inboxes, native integration with Microsoft Word, Slack, Gmail and Google Drive, automated routing, and equal support for Mac users. Wordsmith, which positions itself as an in-house platform connecting to existing workplace tools, drew on multiple frontier models with automatic optimisation between them. Privacy counsel was involved early in the evaluation, and the vendor's anonymised data processing along with DPA and MSA support informed the decision. Announced workflows include vendor contract handling projected to exceed 100 contracts a month with redlines returned in Word for legal review, an Ask Legal agent serving an internal channel of about 2,000 people drawing on an approved knowledge base exceeding 120 pages, document classification and routing, scheduled regulatory scans delivered via Slack and email, and contract intelligence search across thousands of files. Adyen was already processing payments for more than one billion consumers globally by early 2025, per its own disclosure.

Industry Implications

Adyen's choice sharpens a competitive line between platforms built for law firms and those built for corporate risk functions, a divide that has widened as legal operations teams seek single systems of record. It also validates the consolidation thesis: buyers appear less willing to fund separate tools for intake, research, contract review and compliance monitoring when one platform can connect to Slack, email and cloud storage. For Wordsmith, landing a bank regulated across three continents is a reference that carries weight in financial services, where procurement scrutiny and privacy review are unforgiving. Competitors selling point solutions into compliance and procurement should expect buyers to ask why the legal team needs a different interface than the risk team sitting nearby.

DreamLegal Perspective

Legal operations leaders should read Adyen's evaluation criteria as a checklist: tool consolidation, workflow guardrails that keep human judgement on exceptions, integration with where employees already work, and privacy review running in parallel rather than after selection. That combination is likely to determine which legal AI vendors survive enterprise procurement in regulated sectors. The harder question is governance. Once agents answer routine questions for thousands of employees and route contracts automatically, the knowledge base and playbook maintenance become ongoing operational work, not a one-time implementation. Vendors that treat content upkeep as a customer problem will lose renewals. Watch whether Adyen publishes utilisation or turnaround metrics after full rollout; without them, the market has an endorsement but no evidence of measurable return.
