Anthropic Expands Claude for Legal Teams

Anthropic launches 20+ MCP connectors and 12 legal plugins for Claude, targeting law firms and in-house legal teams.

Anthropic on May 12, 2026, announced more than 20 new MCP connectors and 12 practice-area plugins for Claude, built specifically for legal professionals. The release connects Claude to the core software that legal teams already use, from contract lifecycle systems to e-discovery platforms. The company says legal professionals have become the most engaged users of Claude Cowork among all knowledge-work functions since the first legal plugin launched earlier this year.

This expansion matters because legal work depends on a fragmented set of tools, and Claude now integrates directly into that stack. Rather than asking lawyers to change how they work, Anthropic is bringing Claude into the systems they already rely on daily.

New Connectors

The MCP connectors cover six broad categories: contract lifecycle and drafting, deal rooms and transaction documents, document management, e-discovery and review, legal research, and public service tools.

On the contract side, Docusign connects Claude to agreement data so users can surface key terms like renewal dates and obligations. Ironclad lets Claude access a firm's contract repository and answer questions about contracts in plain language, with results scoped automatically to each user's permissions. Definely gives live access to contract structure, allowing users to resolve definitions, validate cross-references, and run structural comparisons to see how edits affect an entire agreement.

For document management, iManage gives Claude permission-bound, auditable access to governed content including matter history and institutional knowledge, without requiring bulk exports. NetDocuments allows Claude to search, retrieve, and draft documents based on a firm's own precedents while respecting existing governance policies.

In e-discovery, Relativity lets Claude set up matters, shape workspace structure, and govern access within its RelativityOne platform. Everlaw allows Claude to search and retrieve documents using metadata, keywords, and document types, with direct links back to the review platform.

For legal research, Midpage connects Claude to case law with every result hyperlinked to verified sources. Trellis provides access to the largest state trial-court dataset in the United States, covering dockets, rulings, verdicts, and filings across all 50 states. Legal Data Hunter gives Claude access to more than 31 million documents from over 160 jurisdictions.

On the public service side, Courtroom5 provides legal guidance to civil litigants who appear without an attorney, covering case intake, deadline calculation, and next-step guidance across all 50 states. Free Law Project connects Claude to millions of US court opinions, PACER dockets, and judge profiles through CourtListener.

Practice Plugins

The 12 new practice-area plugins each target a specific legal role. Available plugins include Commercial Legal, Corporate Legal, Employment Legal, Privacy Legal, Product Legal, Regulatory Legal, AI Governance Legal, IP Legal, Litigation Legal, Law Student, Legal Clinic, and Legal Builder Hub.

Each plugin begins with a setup interview that captures the team's specific playbook, escalation chain, risk calibration, and drafting style. The outputs are tailored to that configuration rather than returning generic results.

Five of the plugins, specifically Commercial Legal, Corporate Legal, Litigation Legal, and Product Legal, are also available as cookbooks for deployment as Managed Agents in the Claude Platform. This allows legal teams to use them programmatically for high-volume or automated workflows.

Access and Justice

Anthropic is also addressing the legal access gap through partnerships with the Free Law Project and the Justice Technology Association. Qualifying legal aid clinics, public defenders, and nonprofit legal services organizations can access significantly discounted pricing through the Claude for Nonprofits program.

Free and low-cost tools from BoardWise, Courtroom5, Descrybe, and Free Law Project are available to Claude users through MCP connectors as part of this initiative.

Legal technology companies have responded positively to the integrations. The new connectors and plugins are built on open protocols, meaning firms and in-house teams can customize Claude to match their practice. Early contributors including Box, Legal Quants, Lawve AI, and Thomson Reuters have already published their own skills, plugins, and style conventions to the Directory.

All new connectors and practice-area plugins are open source and available through Claude Cowork. Enterprise admins can enable them through workspace settings.
