August launches Live Assist, a real-time tool that flags contradictions during depositions and client calls.

Legal AI company August released Live Assist on March 2, 2026, a feature that joins live legal conversations, transcribes them, and cross-references statements against uploaded case documents to surface contradictions in real time. The tool targets a specific gap lawyers face: the inability to simultaneously listen, strategize, and verify statements against case files during depositions and client calls. August made Live Assist available immediately to all users at no additional cost.

This launch matters because contradiction detection during live legal proceedings has historically been a manual, memory-dependent task. Live Assist automates the cross-referencing process, giving lawyers access to source-cited flags while the conversation is still in progress.

How It Works

Lawyers upload case documents to August before a conversation begins. These can include prior testimony, declarations, contracts, email productions, company policies, and earlier call transcripts.

Once Live Assist is active, it transcribes the conversation with speaker labels and compares each statement against the uploaded documents in real time. When it detects an inconsistency, it surfaces a flag in a side panel alongside the exact source citation.

Hovering over a flag reveals the highlighted passage from the original document. The interface is passive by design: flags appear quietly while the lawyer stays focused on the conversation.

Use Cases

August identifies four primary use cases for Live Assist beyond depositions.

During client calls, the tool verifies what a client says against contracts and prior statements, allowing lawyers to clarify discrepancies before they affect credibility. In witness preparation sessions, it catches inconsistencies before a witness takes the stand. During settlement negotiations, it flags mischaracterized terms in the room, not in a follow-up email. In internal investigations, it monitors interviews against prior statements and document productions as they happen.

At the end of any session, Live Assist produces a cross-referenced, annotated record showing what was said and where it diverged from the documents.

The Problem It Solves

Rutvik Rau, Co-Founder and CEO of August, described the core tradeoff that Live Assist addresses directly.

"Lawyers have always had to choose between being present in a conversation and verifying what's being said. Live Assist means they no longer have to pick one," Rau said.

Thomas Bueler-Faudree, Co-founder of August, explained the bandwidth problem behind the product.

"Nobody can listen, strategize, and cross-reference hundreds of pages at the same time, so you pick one and hope for the best on the rest," Bueler-Faudree said.

The company distinguished existing transcription tools and Live Assist, stating that transcription tools write down what was said, while Live Assist identifies what does not add up.

Data and Privacy

August built Live Assist with attorney-client privilege, work product protections, and confidentiality obligations in mind. Audio is encrypted in transit, logically separated from other customers, and not used to train models.

The company notes that compliance with local recording and consent laws remains the responsibility of the lawyer using the tool, as it does with any recording tool.

Live Assist is available immediately to all existing August users at no additional cost.
