Blue J raised $122 million in Series D funding led by Oak HC/FT and Sapphire Ventures to expand its AI-powered tax research platform.
Funding Details and Growth Metrics
The Series D round was led by Oak HC/FT and Sapphire Ventures, with participation from Intrepid Growth Partners and existing investors Ten Coves Capital and CPA.com. This funding follows Blue J's Series C round completed just seven months earlier in December 2024.
Blue J more than doubled its revenue and customer base in the first half of 2025. The company now serves tens of thousands of tax professionals across thousands of organizations. Over 70% of users log in weekly, and the platform maintains a Net Promoter Score consistently in the mid-70s.
Since January 2025, Blue J has grown to over 80 employees and more than doubled its rate of new customer acquisition.
AI-Powered Tax Research Platform
Blue J's platform uses generative AI to answer complex tax questions across US federal, state, local, Canadian, and UK tax law. The system operates on a curated database of authoritative tax law and learns from millions of user queries annually.
Unlike traditional keyword-based research tools, Blue J allows conversational queries without specialized syntax. The platform delivers answers in seconds with relevant source citations.
"Tax research has long been a cumbersome, time-consuming task," said Allen Miller, Partner at Oak HC/FT. "Blue J has solved this challenge with an elegant AI solution that dramatically accelerates research while raising the bar for accuracy."
Market Position and Technology
Blue J differentiates itself through its conversational interface and proprietary tax law database. The platform covers multiple jurisdictions, addressing the complexity of modern tax compliance for multinational organizations.
"Blue J is exactly what we look for in vertical AI: deep domain expertise, proprietary data and a product that drives meaningful business impact," said Cathy Gao, Partner at Sapphire Ventures and Blue J's newest board member.
The company has earned recognition from OpenAI, with Marc Manara, Head of Startups at OpenAI, noting Blue J as "a leading example of effective AI deployment in one of the most complex information domains."
Expansion Plans
Blue J will use the Series D funding to accelerate team expansion, product development, and market reach. The company aims to establish itself as the standard for AI-driven tax research as global tax complexity continues increasing.
"With this capital and industry support, we will accelerate innovation and deliver even greater value to tax professionals," said Benjamin Alarie, CEO and co-founder of Blue J. "We are building the future of tax. This is just the beginning."
