Casepoint on Monday released AI Investigator Agent, a purpose-built tool that automates the document-sorting and fact-extraction work that forces most corporate and government investigators to either queue up for a forensic examiner or read through collections manually. The product sits inside Casepoint eDiscovery and joins two earlier AI agents, Relevance Determination Agent and Issue Coding Agent, in the company's Casepoint IQ suite. General availability is set for November.

Investigations have outgrown the tools built for them

The timing reflects a structural mismatch that has been widening for years. Corporate compliance caseloads have grown alongside the data types investigators must cover: email, documents, audio, video, mobile, and chat all now appear routinely in a single matter. Yet most available tools were designed for a different user. Forensic platforms assume certified examiners. Analytics suites carry price tags and skill requirements that rule them out for lean investigation teams. Standard eDiscovery platforms presuppose litigation support staff that pre-litigation inquiries rarely have on hand.

The gap has pushed investigators toward improvised workflows, often using Outlook or SharePoint to manually review collections that can span terabytes. When findings arrive late or thin, the investigation office's credibility takes the hit, not the tools.

What the agent actually does for investigators

AI Investigator Agent accepts a plain-language description of an investigation, then narrows the document population to material likely to be relevant. It extracts key facts, cites each one back to its source document, and maps documents to investigative themes. Timeline views and data visualizations surface the narrative structure of a case. Investigators build their findings report inside the same workspace rather than exporting data and reconstructing everything in a separate tool.

The product runs within Casepoint's existing security boundary, under the customer's own permissions and access controls, and scales to terabyte-level collections. Casepoint holds FedRAMP High and Department of Defense Impact Level 5 and 6 authorizations, which positions the product for federal agency use cases where data sovereignty requirements eliminate most commercial AI offerings. No specialized training is required to operate it.

Agentic AI in legal ops is moving from litigation to compliance

The launch signals a broader directional shift in legal technology. AI agents in legal operations have so far concentrated on litigation workflows: document review, issue coding, privilege logging. Casepoint is now extending agentic automation earlier in the legal lifecycle, into the investigations phase that precedes any formal proceeding. That move puts it in proximity to compliance and HR investigation platforms, internal audit tools, and case management software that has historically occupied a separate market lane from eDiscovery.

For enterprise legal buyers and government legal operations teams, the proposition is consolidation. Fewer specialist dependencies, one governed platform, and a documented evidence chain that holds up if a matter escalates to litigation or a regulatory proceeding. Competitors in the eDiscovery and legal AI space will face pressure to show comparable investigation-stage capability or risk losing the pre-litigation entry point entirely.

DreamLegal Perspective

Legal operations and compliance leaders evaluating investigation workflows should watch this category closely. The move to embed agentic AI at the allegation stage, before any formal legal hold or litigation hold is triggered, compresses the window between incident and documented findings. Vendors who can credibly own that pre-litigation phase gain a structural advantage in enterprise renewals and upsells. For buyers, the key due diligence questions are audit trail integrity, how human-in-the-loop controls surface in practice, and whether the platform's security authorizations actually match the agency or enterprise's data classification requirements. The tool that wins pre-litigation investigations is well placed to anchor the full matter lifecycle.
