Checkbox Secures $23M to Automate Legal Intake

Checkbox announced a $23 million Series A funding round led by Touring Capital to expand its AI-powered platform that automates legal request management for in-house teams.

New York-based Checkbox closed the funding on January 29, 2026, with participation from Peak XV, Conductive Ventures, Tidal Ventures, Five V Capital, and angel investors including Jerry Ting, VP and Head of Agentic AI at Workday. The company will use the capital to develop its AI Legal Front Door platform, which captures and manages legal work across enterprises.

Legal departments face increasing workloads without proportional headcount growth. Requests currently arrive through email, Slack, and other manual channels, forcing legal teams to spend time on low-value triage work. Checkbox addresses this by centralizing intake and automating routine tasks while routing complex matters to lawyers.

Platform Features

Checkbox's AI Legal Front Door integrates with email, Slack, Teams, Salesforce, and intranet portals to capture legal requests where employees already work. AI Agents convert conversations into automated workflows for tasks ranging from contract drafting to conflict of interest approvals. The system handles routine work through self-service while directing high-risk matters to legal staff.

"We've seen tremendous demand for the Legal Front Door and the market is really resonating with how we've uniquely solved this problem," said Evan Wong, Co-founder and CEO of Checkbox. "Our customers go from operating in the dark and spending time on things they shouldn't be, to working on what matters and getting visibility into demand, workload, and cycle times, which enables them to do better resource planning and demonstrate their value to the business."

The platform provides visibility into legal activity, enabling teams to track demand patterns and cycle times. This data helps legal departments plan resources and demonstrate value to business stakeholders.

Customer Results

Over 100 enterprise organizations currently use Checkbox, including SAP, PepsiCo, and multiple Fortune 500 companies. Hitachi reports that 83% of routine legal and compliance requests are now partially or fully automated through the platform.

"Tech implementations often fall short of expectations, but Checkbox really surprised us and exceeded our expectations," said Jeannine Moran, Director of Legal Operations at Hitachi. "Usually, you're relying on IT and it would be a multi-year initiative to stand up something as robust as the legal front door but with Checkbox, we were able to do it in just months with minimal IT support."

The automation frees Hitachi's legal and compliance team to focus on higher-value, risk-sensitive work instead of administrative tasks.

Investment Rationale

Touring Capital views Checkbox as establishing a foundational layer for legal operations. The platform serves as an orchestration system that routes requests, integrates with existing legal technology, and converts institutional knowledge into repeatable workflows.

"Checkbox is defining the category for legal service management, a purpose-built orchestration layer that makes it possible to capture, manage, and automate legal work end-to-end," said Evan Wijaya, Principal at Touring Capital. "As more legal work becomes AI-assisted, the winners will be the platforms that can route requests intelligently, integrate across the legal tech stack, and turn institutional knowledge into scalable workflows."

Product Development

Co-Founder and Chief Product Officer James Han stated the Series A funding will support Checkbox's vision to build a system of intelligence for legal work. The company plans to expand AI capabilities, deepen technology stack integrations, and scale adoption of the Legal Front Door across the industry.

The platform turns everyday requests into institutional expertise that AI can leverage to accelerate work, ensure consistency, and reduce reliance on outside counsel. Checkbox offers a no-code interface that legal teams can configure without extensive IT support.

To mark the funding announcement, Checkbox is offering legal teams the opportunity to build their first AI agent for legal intake at no cost. Teams can learn more at checkbox.ai/ai-agent.
