CMS Germany Rolls Out ClauseBuddy to All Lawyers

CMS Germany has deployed ClauseBuddy, a legal drafting solution by Belgian company ClauseBase, to all lawyers across its German operations.

This adoption signals a shift in law firm technology preferences toward specialized tools that combine traditional document automation with AI capabilities, rather than broad-platform solutions. The decision also highlights growing price sensitivity in the legal tech market and potential regional preferences for European-made solutions.

Balanced Technology Approach

CMS Germany selected ClauseBuddy over multiple competitors because it blends traditional document automation with AI features. The firm sought a solution that combines curated clause libraries with AI-powered drafting components.

"It covers the best of the old world and also includes the new world of AI and blends them into something that is very neatly done," said Frederik Leenen, Head of Legal Tech at CMS. "ClauseBuddy is kind of a Swiss army knife. It has many different tools that all help you do what you expect them to do."

The firm invested in creating a curated clause library that provides immediate access to institutional knowledge. This library works alongside AI drafting features to deliver consistent results.

Knowledge Management Integration

ClauseBuddy addresses knowledge management challenges by allowing firms to maintain their own clause libraries and templates. Lawyers can modify existing content using AI tools and avoid starting contract drafts from scratch.

"ClauseBuddy is one of the tools also covering the whole topic of knowledge management," explained Katja Grabka, Senior Legal Tech Specialist at CMS. "That means you have your own clause libraries with your own templates. With AI, you can rewrite them and edit them, and when you are drafting new contracts, you don't have to start from scratch."

Microsoft Word Integration Drives Adoption

The platform operates as a Microsoft Word add-in, meeting lawyers in their existing workflow environment. ClauseBuddy was designed with layout-awareness capabilities that prevent formatting issues when inserting clauses into documents.

This deep Word integration has driven adoption beyond early technology adopters within the firm. The tool's interface makes functions clearly understandable to users who typically resist new technology implementations.

Pricing Influences Market Competition

Cost considerations played a significant role in CMS Germany's selection process. The legal tech market's competitive landscape has created a buyer's market where pricing must adapt to increased competition.

ClauseBase, founded in 2019, positioned itself as offering the best value for money among available options. This pricing strategy reflects broader market pressures as law firms evaluate multiple competing applications.

European Regional Pattern Emerges

The selection follows a pattern of major European law firms choosing technology solutions developed within Europe. This trend may reflect data sovereignty requirements, pricing advantages, or preference for supporting regional technology companies.

Other CMS network firms have begun adopting ClauseBuddy following Germany's implementation, with additional firms currently running trials. CMS also sees potential for client adoption, particularly among in-house legal teams.
