Coupa Acquires Tonkean to Boost AI Procurement Tools

Coupa acquired Tonkean on May 21, 2026, to add agentic intake and workflow automation to its global trade network.

Coupa, a cloud-based spend management platform, has acquired Tonkean, an AI-native intake and orchestration platform founded in 2015 and headquartered in Palo Alto. The deal, announced on May 21, 2026, in Foster City, California, brings Tonkean's no-code workflow tools into Coupa's network of more than 3,500 buyers and 10 million suppliers. Coupa made the move to close a gap in autonomous procurement execution, connecting the full cycle from purchase request to final payment.

This acquisition matters because procurement teams at large enterprises still lose significant time to manual handoffs and fragmented systems. Tonkean directly addresses that by automating intake, triage, and resolution of internal requests without requiring code changes or system replacements.

What the Deal Adds

Tonkean brings a natural language interface that allows users to submit and track procurement requests. According to the companies, this interface has driven a 2.2x increase in user adoption.

The platform also includes a 100% no-code process builder and more than 250 native connectors. These plug into a company's existing technology infrastructure without requiring a full system overhaul.

The combined offering is projected to reduce procurement cycle times by 50% and save operations teams over 30 hours per week.

Coupa's Acquisition History

Tonkean is the fourth company Coupa has acquired as part of its strategy to build an agentic trade network. The three prior acquisitions were Cirtuo, Scoutbee, and Rossum.

Each acquisition targets a specific operational gap. Rossum focused on document processing. Tonkean now adds orchestration and multi-agent coordination, meaning the ability for multiple AI agents to coordinate and complete tasks together.

Coupa's data foundation now covers $10 trillion in transaction data, built over 20 years and across its global buyer and supplier network.

Coupa CEO Leagh Turner said the combination of Rossum and Tonkean gives the company all the components needed for autonomous trade execution.

"To deliver the promise of increasingly autonomous execution of transactions between buyers and suppliers, you need three main things: industrial-grade and unified orchestration, best-in-class buyer and supplier workflows, and clean, trusted data," Turner said. "With the acquisitions of Rossum and Tonkean, in short order, we have now amassed all the assets to make this promise possible for both buyers and suppliers."

Tonkean Co-Founder and CEO Sagi Eliyahu described the rationale from Tonkean's side.

"With our industrial-grade intake and orchestration now serving as the backbone and foundation for their industry-leading agentic trade network and data, we will seamlessly connect buyers, sellers, and agents in a unified way to deliver autonomous trade in a way that no other company can match," Eliyahu said.

Integration and Next Steps

Coupa's Chief Product and Technology Officer Salvatore Lombardo said Tonkean's connectors wrap around existing customer architecture, which means companies do not need to replace current systems to use the new capabilities.

Coupa plans to host a live walkthrough of the unified Coupa and Tonkean experience on June 4, 2026. No pricing details for the acquisition were disclosed.
