Dye & Durham Names Interim CEO as Board Ends Transformation Committee
Share article

Dye & Durham appointed former Chief Operating Officer Todd Schulte interim CEO on Aug. 31, as the Canadian legal technology company dissolved its temporary Transformation Committee and installed Angela Zhang as board chair. The moves consolidate executive authority while the board continues searching for a permanent chief executive. Mary Filippelli left the board after serving as chair, while Tyler Proud’s committee also concluded its work.
The leadership reset comes as Dye & Durham continues to simplify a business spanning legal practice management, transaction data and payments infrastructure. The company operates in Canada, the United Kingdom, Ireland, Australia and South Africa, giving the transition significance beyond a single software product or regional market. Its governance structure had temporarily placed the duties of the CEO’s office with the Transformation Committee while directors pursued a permanent appointment. Schulte’s elevation replaces that interim collective arrangement with one executive accountable for operating decisions. The company did not provide a timetable for completing the CEO search.
Schulte brings more than three decades of experience in multi-product organizations, according to the company, and most recently ran operations at Dye & Durham. His stated priorities include maintaining the pace of internal change, reducing complexity, expanding the use of AI and technology, and improving customer and shareholder outcomes. Those priorities point to the practical challenge facing broad legal technology platforms: they must modernize products while making a diverse operating portfolio easier for customers to navigate. For law firms and other users, the immediate change is less likely to be a new product announcement than a shift in who sets execution priorities and owns delivery. The company gave no financial figures tied to the appointments.
Industry Implications
The appointments highlight how governance and product execution are becoming intertwined in legal technology. A platform that combines practice management with corporate data and payments must coordinate workflows across different customer groups, regulatory environments and revenue models. That raises the importance of operating discipline for enterprise legal buyers, which increasingly evaluate vendors on implementation, reliability and the ability to connect systems, not only on feature lists.
Schulte’s emphasis on AI also places the company within the sector’s broader push toward automation, including legal research, contract management and emerging AI agents. But AI investment will compete for management attention with the less visible work of consolidating products, improving data quality and supporting existing customers. Competitors may use a leadership transition to differentiate on product focus or executive stability, while legal operations teams may scrutinize roadmap continuity and service commitments before expanding a vendor relationship.
DreamLegal Perspective
Legal technology vendors should treat leadership changes as an execution test, not simply a governance event. Dye & Durham customers and prospects should monitor whether the interim CEO’s simplification agenda produces clearer product ownership, consistent support and measurable progress on AI-enabled capabilities. The permanent CEO search will be an important signal of the board’s strategy: whether it prioritizes operating efficiency, platform expansion or a narrower focus on core legal workflows. Legal operations professionals assessing the company should maintain continuity plans and test competing systems where critical processes depend on a single platform.
