Emma Legal, an AI-powered due diligence platform, announced a direct integration with Thomson Reuters HighQ, allowing M&A lawyers to automatically transfer client documents from HighQ into Emma without manual steps.
The integration removes a workflow gap that previously required lawyers to manually move documents between the two platforms before due diligence could begin. For M&A teams under deal timelines, that friction now disappears.
The Workflow Gap
M&A legal due diligence has historically required lawyers to manage documents across multiple platforms. HighQ serves as the transaction management layer, handling client collaboration, secure document sharing, and legal project management. Emma handles the due diligence analysis.
Before this integration, documents stored in HighQ had to be transferred manually to Emma before review could start. Every hour spent on that transfer was time not spent on legal analysis.
Now, when a data room opens in HighQ, documents flow directly into Emma. The review begins without any manual action from the legal team.
What Emma Does
Emma ingests every document in a data room and maps content against a pre-built information request list covering more than 180 document categories. The platform flags missing documentation and identifies clause-level deviations from market standard terms.
The output is a structured preliminary report that a partner can use in a client call the day after the data room opens. Emma reviews every file in the data room, applying the same level of attention to document 3,400 as to document 12.
This shifts the starting point for M&A teams. Instead of spending the first days of a deal organizing and triaging documents, the team can move directly into analysis.
Who Uses HighQ
HighQ is used by more than half of the 100 largest law firms globally. It functions as the operating layer of a deal, covering client collaboration, matter workspaces, and legal project management from mandate to close.
As one legal tech solutions manager at Bird & Bird noted: "HighQ gives firms the ability to scale complex product solutions quickly across clients and teams, transforming the client experience."
HighQ was not designed as a due diligence engine. That is a separate problem requiring a different tool. This integration connects the two without replacing either.
Why It Matters Now
The integration reflects a broader shift in M&A legal practice. The question for most firms is no longer whether to use AI in due diligence. It is which tools are actually built for the workflow and whether they connect with the systems already in use.
Emma connects with HighQ because that is where the documents already live for a large portion of the global M&A market. Reducing the steps between document storage and due diligence review has direct consequences for deal velocity and client experience.
As stated in the Emma announcement: "We built Emma because M&A lawyers told us they deserved better than spending their best hours on document triage. Every integration we add is a direct response to what they asked for."
M&A teams using HighQ can set up the connection through Emma's contact page.
