Harvey Adds AI-Powered Search and File Organization to Legal Document Vaults

Harvey has introduced AI-driven search and file-management capabilities for its Vault document repository, with search generally available and organization offered through an early-access program as of Sept. 8, 2026. The release targets legal teams handling data rooms, discovery productions and large contract collections. It also shifts Harvey’s AI agents beyond document analysis toward the administrative work required to prepare files for analysis.

Vault has traditionally served as the storage and querying layer within Harvey’s broader legal technology platform, alongside agents, legal research tools, shared workspaces and contract intelligence. The new capabilities address a familiar bottleneck in enterprise legal work: analysis is only as effective as the document set selected beforehand. In transactions and litigation, that selection often depends on inconsistent names, incomplete folders and manual review. Harvey’s move reflects a wider industry effort to make AI agents useful across entire workflows rather than limiting them to question-and-answer tasks.

Agentic Vault Search can inspect an attached Vault or a Vault available within a shared Space and identify relevant files without requiring users to specify a folder or exact filename. According to Harvey, the agent considers contextual signals such as folder location, naming patterns and uploader information. Existing user permissions and ethical walls remain in force, while activity is recorded in the workspace audit trail. A separate organization feature allows users to instruct the system to rearrange, rename or tag documents in natural language. Harvey first presents a proposed set of changes for approval, does not alter document contents and provides an option to reverse the latest changes. The organization capability is currently limited to customers admitted to the early-access program.

The release highlights a competitive shift in legal AI from extracting answers to managing the information environment in which those answers are produced. Vendors that connect search, classification and controlled file operations may gain an advantage with legal operations teams that measure technology by workflow completion rather than response quality alone. For enterprise legal buyers, permissions, auditability, human approval and reversibility will be as important as retrieval performance, particularly in matters involving sensitive client information.
