Harvey Adds Anthropic’s Fable 5.1 With U.S.-Only Processing and Opt-In Access

Harvey has begun offering Anthropic’s Fable 5.1 to eligible customers, adding a higher-performing model for complex legal analysis while keeping access optional. The model became available on Sept. 1, 2026, with customers that already enabled Fable 5 receiving access during the rollout. Harvey’s early testing identified the largest gains in litigation and dispute-resolution work.

The release places model selection, rather than simple feature expansion, at the center of legal AI procurement. Harvey has positioned its platform across legal research, document analysis, AI agents, contract work and collaboration, but the Fable 5.1 rollout highlights a more operational question: how enterprise legal teams balance capability, cost, data handling and jurisdictional controls. Harvey said Fable 5.1 performed particularly well on document-intensive assignments and showed notable results in data privacy, cybersecurity and capital-markets tasks. The company also said the model remained effective at its lowest reasoning setting while generating roughly half as many output tokens. That combination could matter in agreement review and other repetitive work, where throughput and consumption efficiency can influence the economics of deployment. Customers must opt in, however, and Harvey disclosed that Fable 5.1 and Fable 5 are processed in the United States without regional-processing options.

The data terms create a second layer of scrutiny. Eligible customers can use the models with zero data retention under a temporary exemption while Anthropic develops Enterprise Frontier Safeguards. Those safeguards are intended to allow eligible organizations to run Anthropic’s most capable models while retaining data in cloud infrastructure controlled by Harvey or the customer. Until that capability is available, legal operations teams must evaluate whether the temporary arrangement fits existing customer commitments and internal policies.
