Harvey Secures $50 Million From Ontario Teachers’ as Legal AI Push Expands in Canada

Harvey has secured a $50 million investment from Ontario Teachers’ Pension Plan, lifting the legal AI company’s total funding to $600 million on Sept. 24, 2026. The transaction extends a recent financing led by Diffusion and Lightspeed Venture Partners and gives Harvey a major Canadian institutional investor as it expands its domestic customer and employee base.

Harvey’s move reflects a shift in legal technology from experimentation toward broad organizational adoption. Its platform combines AI agents, document analysis, legal research, contract intelligence and workflow tools for law firms and in-house departments. The company’s Canadian push also comes as legal teams assess how to deploy AI across sensitive work while retaining control over data, institutional knowledge and review processes. Harvey says its Tenet model, which it post-trained internally, provides greater control over the intelligence supporting its products. That positioning puts model ownership and product specialization at the center of competition among legal AI vendors.

Teachers’ Venture Growth, Ontario Teachers’ late-stage venture and growth investment arm, made the investment. Rick Prostko, its senior managing director, said the fund sees Harvey’s internally post-trained model as a differentiator that could support product development and customer adoption. CEO Winston Weinberg said the partnership would support Harvey’s efforts to serve Canadian legal teams. The company now works with more than 100 Canadian law firms and legal teams, including Davies Ward Phillips & Vineberg, Dentons Canada and Gowling WLG. Newly announced customers include Blaney McMurtry, Cain Lamarre, Lavery, MLT Aikins, Torkin Manes, Epstein Cole, Lenczner Slaght, AtkinsRéalis’ tax team, Dentalcorp and RONA.

Harvey opened a Toronto office in 2025 and has more than 30 Canadian employees across engineering, customer success, sales and legal innovation. It has also hired Erin Kanygin, formerly of Stewart McKelvey, as a legal innovation partner alongside Toronto-based Joe Marando, a former Fasken legal technology executive. The company is recruiting in Toronto, suggesting that the Canadian operation is intended to support implementation and account development rather than serve only as a sales outpost.

Industry Implications

The financing underscores the importance of distribution and local expertise as legal AI vendors compete for enterprise legal budgets. A large Canadian pension investor can provide more than capital: it may strengthen Harvey’s credibility with risk-conscious buyers and reinforce the company’s regional commitment. The expanding customer list also shows that adoption is reaching full-service firms, boutiques and corporate legal departments, creating pressure on competitors to support varied workflows rather than a single research use case. For legal operations teams, the central buying question is moving toward whether a vendor can combine capable AI agents with governance, deployment support and durable control over the underlying systems.

DreamLegal Perspective

Legal technology vendors should treat Harvey’s Canadian expansion as a signal that regional coverage, implementation talent and model governance are becoming strategic assets. Legal operations professionals evaluating AI should look beyond headline funding and compare how vendors handle proprietary knowledge, workflow integration, security and measurable adoption across practice groups. Harvey’s next test will be converting its expanding footprint into repeatable outcomes for firms and in-house teams while maintaining product quality as deployments broaden.
