iManage Launches MCP Server for Governed AI Access

iManage released its MCP Server on May 14, 2026, giving AI tools secure, permission-based access to legal documents stored on its platform.

The release addresses a specific and growing problem in legal and professional services: AI tools cannot easily connect to client documents without either custom engineering work or bulk data exports that bypass existing security controls. As firms adopt multiple AI products at once, the lack of a standard connection layer creates compliance and operational risks.

The Problem It Solves

Today, connecting an AI tool to a document management system typically requires a custom API integration built for each tool. As organizations add more AI products, those integrations multiply. According to iManage's Knowledge Work Benchmark Report 2026, 32% of leaders cite integration complexity as one of the biggest barriers to AI adoption.

iManage MCP Server replaces that model with a single, standardized connection. MCP, or Model Context Protocol, is an open, vendor-neutral protocol that allows any compatible AI system to connect to a data source once it is configured. Any AI tool that supports MCP can connect to iManage content through that single setup.

What the Product Does

The server allows AI systems such as Harvey, Legora, ChatGPT, Claude, and Microsoft Copilot to access iManage content without extracting documents in bulk. Access is authenticated and permission-bound, meaning each AI tool can only see what the user is already authorized to view within iManage. All access is logged, preserving the audit trail required for legal and compliance purposes.

The product also respects ethical walls, which are information barriers that law firms use to prevent conflicts of interest by restricting which staff can access specific matters. These controls remain active even when an AI tool is querying the system.

Firms can also request that their AI vendors route access through the MCP Server rather than pulling documents outside the platform. iManage notes that customers should confirm with their vendors what data leaves the system and how it is handled downstream.

They are already experimenting with multiple AI tools, and the real challenge is connecting them to the knowledge that matters most without creating new governance gaps or operational complexity."

Market Context

The release comes at a time when legal and professional services organizations are adopting AI tools faster than governance frameworks can keep up. The iManage Knowledge Work Benchmark Report 2026 found that nearly half of global leaders expect new legal frameworks to emerge specifically to govern AI-to-AI interactions within the decade. Two-thirds of those leaders say that shift will be transformational for their business.

For organizations managing sensitive client information, connecting AI tools to governed content without weakening existing controls is a practical requirement, not an optional feature.
