Legora acquires Walter AI to expand its agentic legal AI platform across Canada and globally.
Legora, the collaborative AI platform for lawyers, announced on March 11, 2026, the acquisition of Walter AI, an agent-native legal AI company trusted by leading Canadian law firms, including Fasken Martineau and McCarthy Tétrault. The deal expands Legora's agentic capabilities and strengthens its foothold in the Canadian legal market.
This acquisition signals a shift in how legal AI platforms are evolving, moving from simple task assistance to fully agentic systems that execute complex, multi-step legal workflows end-to-end. For law firms, this means AI that can handle entire matters rather than isolated tasks.
The Acquisition Deal
Legora identified Walter AI as a strategic fit based on its agent-native design philosophy and its established relationships with major Canadian law firms that have offices across the country. Walter AI had built its platform through a joint innovation program with Fasken Martineau and McCarthy Tétrault, embedding forward-deployed engineers directly with partners and associates to iterate on real legal workflows.
The result is a platform capable of executing complex multi-step legal workflows, with integrations into core firm systems such as iManage and Outlook. Legora plans to use Walter's Canadian relationships as a foundation to expand its presence in that market while accelerating its broader global strategy.
The Leadership Team
Leading the Walter team are two experienced operators. Ryan Wilson, CEO, is a multi-exited founder who has built and sold five companies across payments, healthcare, cybersecurity, and vertical SaaS. Greg Bell, Principal Engineer, brings infrastructure expertise as a former General Manager of Amazon S3.
"When we met the Legora team, it was clear we had a shared vision for the future of agentic legal technology," said Wilson. "We've built both companies in close partnership with the legal teams actually doing the work. Working with our customers, not just for them, iterating on feedback until the product matches how legal work actually gets done. And we've both arrived at the same conclusion: the future of legal AI is agentic."
Both Wilson and Bell will join Legora following the close of the acquisition.
The Agentic Vision
Legora's expanded platform targets a fully agentic experience for legal teams. A single AI agent would execute workflows end-to-end, from first-mile Outlook intake, through document management system research, multi-document editing, and blacklining (a legal term for tracking changes between document versions), to last-mile client replies.
Max Junestrand, CEO and co-founder of Legora, noted the alignment between the two teams. "When we saw what the Walter team had built, we immediately recognized a shared philosophy around agent-native design," said Junestrand. "The Walter team has approached legal AI the same way we have, embedding closely with lawyers and designing agents to handle real, end-to-end workflows. Bringing our teams together allows us to scale that vision faster."
This approach contrasts with earlier legal AI tools that assisted lawyers with individual tasks. The combined platform is designed to execute entire matter workflows with minimal human interruption, positioning Legora among a new generation of legal technology companies targeting full workflow automation.
Market Positioning
Walter AI's development process was shaped directly by law firm feedback. By placing engineers inside firms and iterating rapidly on real use cases, Walter built integrations that reflect how legal work is actually structured, not how it is assumed to work from the outside. This methodology, shared by Legora, gives the combined company a practical foundation that purely product-led competitors may lack.
The acquisition positions Legora to serve large Canadian law firms with existing Walter relationships while using that base to expand geographically. The Canadian legal market, anchored by national firms such as Fasken Martineau and McCarthy Tétrault, each with offices spanning multiple cities, represents a concentrated entry point for scaling enterprise legal AI.
Legora has not disclosed the financial terms of the acquisition. No employee headcount figures for either company were provided at the time of the announcement.
