Swedish legal AI startup Legora secured $550 million in Series D funding on March 10, 2026, tripling its valuation to $5.55 billion as it targets rapid US expansion.
The raise signals growing investor confidence in legal-specific AI platforms at a time when large language models are reshaping how law firms handle document review, research, and contract drafting.
The Funding Round
Accel led the Series D round, with existing backers Benchmark, Bessemer Venture Partners, General Catalyst, ICONIQ, Redpoint Ventures, and Y Combinator all participating. New investors joining the round include Alkeon Capital, Bain Capital, FirstMark Capital, Menlo Ventures, Salesforce Ventures, Sands Capital, and Starwood Capital.
The latest raise brings Legora's total funding to more than $800 million. It follows a Series C in October 2025 that raised $150 million at a $1.8 billion valuation. Accel investor Arun Mathew, who also co-led Accel's investment into Anthropic, will join Legora's board.
How the Platform Works
Legora uses a combination of large language models, with Anthropic's Claude as its primary model. The platform embeds into tools like Microsoft Word, allowing users to analyze large volumes of documents, conduct research across legal databases, and draft contracts.
The company counts major law firms, including White and Case, Linklaters, and Dentons as clients. Over the past year, Legora expanded from 200 to 800 clients and grew its legal market coverage from 20 to 50 markets.
Plans for US Expansion
Legora launched in the United States roughly one year ago. It recently opened offices in Chicago and Houston, adding to existing hubs in New York and Denver. The company expects to reach 300 US-based employees by the end of 2026.
CEO Max Junestrand said the funding was not driven by immediate financial pressure. "We haven't spent any of the money from our Series C yet," he said. "But we're expecting to significantly go up in our burn rate this year as we scale out the team in the US."
The company grew from 40 to 400 employees over the past year. Currently, roughly a quarter of its staff is based in the US. Legora has more than doubled its sales every quarter since the final three months of 2024, according to Junestrand.
Market Context
Legal AI has attracted significant investor attention as law firms seek tools to reduce time spent on high-volume, repetitive tasks like document review. Competitor Harvey is reportedly in talks to raise funds at an $11 billion valuation.
In February 2026, Anthropic released a legal-focused plugin for automating legal work. The release caused a dip in share prices for traditional legal software and data companies.
Mathew addressed the concern that foundation model providers could eventually crowd out platforms built on top of them. "Twenty years ago we thought Google was going to dominate everything, but there are clearly categories and verticals that are too nuanced to be outsourced to a horizontal provider," he said. "Legal is one of those areas."
Junestrand noted that demand to participate in the funding round stayed strong despite the market reaction to Anthropic's plugin release. He said the infrastructure and architecture around foundation models is a core part of what legal organizations pay for when using a platform like Legora.
Legora's hiring strategy has also shifted. As AI-powered coding tools have improved, the company has moved away from hiring entry-level engineers. It now prioritizes experienced engineers who can review AI-generated code and build the platform's core infrastructure.
