LexisNexis Launches Global AI Workflow System

LexisNexis unveiled a commercial preview of Protégé AI Workflows on January 21, 2026, launching automation tools for legal professionals globally.

The global data and analytics division of RELX Inc. introduced its workflow-first interface featuring hundreds of pre-built workflows backed by citable legal authority. The U.S. commercial preview begins February 1, 2026, with subsequent rollouts planned for Canada, the UK, Europe, Asia Pacific, Africa, and the Middle East.

Legal professionals increasingly demand AI tools they can trust. The new system addresses reliability concerns by grounding workflows in LexisNexis citations and providing hyperlinked case references. This tackles a critical issue where lawyers have previously been burned by AI-generated content lacking proper legal authority.

Workflow Features

The system includes pre-built and configurable workflows for disputes, motions, discoveries, and case strategy. Users can draft motions to dismiss, create documents, clauses, agreements, templates, and perform redlining tasks.

LexisNexis provides a custom workflow builder with a no-code interface. Users can select preferred AI models and create step-by-step automations using workflow libraries shared across teams. This transforms organizational knowledge into repeatable systems.

Internal Testing

LexisNexis deployed the pilot program to its own 52-member legal team. Alex Smyth, EVP and general counsel for LexisNexis Legal & Professional, said the team has been using workflows for reviewing documents, examining redlines, and identifying contract risks.

"All the things which you know we can do ourselves but we can do it in a tenth of the amount of time with this," Smyth said. "It also gives you consistency, because no matter which team member is using it, it gives you the same answers."

Smyth highlighted the citation verification capability. "Our team here is excited about the ability to check all the citation and Shepardize them, because that's obviously a big spot where lawyers generally have been burned by AI," she said.

The legal team uses the tool to quickly identify high-risk areas in customer contracts. Smyth noted the system helps flag problematic sections when reviewing contracts on customer paper.

Industry Context

AI adoption in legal services continues to accelerate. Themis Solutions Inc. reported that 85% of legal professionals planned to increase AI use over the next 12 months in 2025.

The legal AI industry has expanded with major law firms opening new divisions and startups providing specialized services. Companies like Spellbook, Stockholm-based Legora AB, and Soxton AI have emerged to serve different segments of the legal market.

Future Development

LexisNexis plans to release advanced domain-specific workflows for real estate, mergers, and labor. The company is also developing agentic capabilities where Protégé would function as a legal teammate capable of planning, managing, and executing legal tasks autonomously with minimal human oversight.

These agentic features include a Judicial Agentic Workflow that drafts bench memos and full opinions reflecting a judge's ruling and voice, plus AI Guided Research for complex legal research.
