Luminance Adds Memory to Legal AI Platform

Luminance launched institutional memory for its legal AI on January 27, retaining negotiation history across enterprise contracts.

London-based Luminance announced its largest product update in ten years on January 27, 2026, introducing institutional memory capabilities that retain negotiation history and legal decision-making across all enterprise contracts. The update, piloted with Deloitte, Quantinuum, Ingram Micro, and Baringa, will be broadly available from February 25. The company doubled its global revenue in 2025 for the second consecutive year and increased headcount by 40%.

Enterprise contract systems capture negotiation outcomes but lose the context behind decisions. Eleanor Lightbody, CEO of Luminance, said institutional memory "transforms legal AI from a legal tool into the central brain for the entire enterprise." The update addresses what the company calls "enterprise amnesia," where critical context disappears when executives need to understand past contract decisions.

Memory Architecture

The platform uses what Luminance calls "recursive legal context engineering." Graham Sills, co-founder and director of AI at Luminance, explained the system can pull in customer history and other information on demand as it processes queries. The multi-agent architecture operates across every contract lifecycle stage, drawing on short-term memory from previous reasoning steps and long-term memory embedded in the platform.

Specialist AI agents understand context, apply legal reasoning, and take action on behalf of users. Every answer includes visible citations grounded in source material. The architecture combines three elements: Recursive Legal Contextual Understanding for holistic contract analysis, a Panel of Judges approach using diverse models, and a proprietary legal dataset built from over a decade of platform usage.

Speed Claims

Luminance claims contract negotiations will now be 90% faster than manual processes, up from the 70-80% efficiency gains the tool previously offered. The company states legal departments will gain 30% of their time back. Sills said the figures come from measuring how fast Luminance carries out negotiations compared to customer-reported timeframes. The 30% figure derives from analyzing the average makeup of in-house legal teams and where context typically resides.

New Capabilities

The update introduces four core features. Negotiation AI reasons across entire agreements, aligning terms with organizational standards using prior negotiation history. Workflow Orchestration triggers actions as deals progress, notifying relevant people with appropriate context. Contract Intelligence enables queries across complete contracts, contract families, amendments, and obligations. Ask Lumi provides a conversational AI assistant throughout the platform with cited answers.

Peter Lang, Technology Director at Deloitte Legal Australia, said the platform "enables contract analysis and drafting using natural language querying and prompting right where professionals are doing their contracting work." Claire Eldridge, Director of Legal and Compliance Operations at Quantinuum, said the company no longer relies "on manual processes across multiple tools or spend time searching through individual documents."

Growth Trajectory

Luminance posted 127% year-over-year growth in North America in 2025 and closed its first eight-figure enterprise deal. The company analyzed over 18 million contracts across jurisdictions and industries in the past 12 months. Its AI has processed more than 220 million documents total. Headcount growth concentrated in pre-sales and post-sales roles in the United States rather than research and development. The company operates across the UK, Europe, Australia, and the United States.

Market Context

Harvey announced a similar memory feature on January 8, 2026, focused toward law firms. Harvey has not released the feature to customers while working through data privacy and governance challenges with law firm clients. Sills noted that reasoning power and context length of large language models is doubling every few months, with short-term memory capacity increasing continuously.

Deloitte research shows 60% of employees say AI can help transfer skills and expertise from experienced colleagues across organizations. Institutional knowledge loss occurs when experienced employees leave without documenting critical information.
