Luminance, the Cambridge-based legal AI company, has launched Luna Crescent, a vertical AI model built exclusively for contract analysis, to give enterprises faster and more accurate contract intelligence than general-purpose large language models currently provide.

The launch signals a meaningful shift in how legal AI companies are positioning their technology. Rather than layering general-purpose models onto legal workflows, Luminance has built and trained a model from the ground up on contract-specific data, seeking to close the accuracy and speed gaps that legal teams have long encountered with generic AI tools.

A Specialist Model

Luna Crescent was trained on a subset of Luminance's proprietary dataset, which spans over 220 million verified legal documents. The model was developed over more than a decade of research, with the final build taking approximately one year.

The model does not treat legal text as general language. It processes contracts as structures of obligations, rights, risks and commercial consequences, enabling it to identify non-standard clause constructions, classify obligations buried in dense boilerplate, and flag what is absent from a contract, not just what is present.

Luminance developed ContractIQ Bench, a proprietary benchmark comprising over 180,000 manually annotated data points, to evaluate the model. The benchmark tests a model's ability to interpret key contract provisions such as liability caps, termination for convenience, and confidentiality obligations.

Performance Against General Models

Luna Crescent achieved 5% higher accuracy on contract understanding tasks compared to leading general-purpose models, based on ContractIQ Bench testing on previously unseen legal concepts. Legal experts, in blind evaluations, preferred Luna Crescent the majority of the time for its ability to identify contractual concepts and extract key information from complex clauses.

Speed is an equally significant differentiator. Luna Crescent processes text at 200 to 400 tokens per second, nearly four times faster than general-purpose alternatives. A task that takes 30 seconds on a general model takes under eight seconds on Luna Crescent. Across an enterprise contract repository, that difference translates to substantial time recovered and faster decision-making.

Graham Sills, Co-Founder and Director of AI at Luminance, described the model's intent directly: "With Luna Crescent, enterprises finally have an LLM built for their work rather than borrowed from elsewhere. This is what vertical AI should deliver: greater accuracy, greater speed and greater trust for the work that matters most."

Enterprise Architecture and Governance

Luna Crescent sits within Luminance's own AI stack, which the company says gives customers clearer oversight of how their contract intelligence is built, governed and applied. This matters in legal contexts, where data sensitivity and traceability are persistent concerns.

The model also operates within Luminance's broader multi-model architecture, which allows the platform to deploy the best model, or combination of models, for each legal task. This design enables what Luminance calls Legal-Grade agents, which are not limited to answering questions but can take context-aware action across the full contract lifecycle, from review and negotiation to post-signature management.

Sills added: "By developing Luna Crescent within our own AI stack, we can give customers clarity over how their contract intelligence is built, governed and applied to their business, and power Legal-Grade agents capable of taking precise, context-aware action across the contract lifecycle."

What Comes Next

Luna Crescent is the first model in the Luna family. Luminance has not disclosed a timeline for subsequent models in the series but has indicated that the family will continue to underpin its contract intelligence capabilities and agentic workflows.

The model is already embedded across Luminance's contract intelligence features, serving over 1,000 enterprise customers across more than 70 countries.
