Microsoft Launches Legal Agent in Word for Contract Review

Microsoft launched its Legal Agent in Microsoft Word on April 30, 2026, bringing structured AI-driven contract review directly into the word processor used by millions of legal teams worldwide.

This matters because it signals a shift from general-purpose AI tools toward purpose-built legal workflow automation embedded in software that legal professionals already use daily.

What It Does

The Legal Agent handles contract review, redlining, and playbook-based analysis inside Word on a Windows desktop. It reviews contracts clause by clause, flags provisions that do not meet internal standards, and generates negotiation-ready redlines with tracked changes.

The agent also works on documents that already contain tracked changes. It separates prior revisions from new proposals, so negotiation history stays intact throughout the review process.

How It Works

The agent does not rely entirely on a large language model to generate every edit. According to Sumit Chauhan, President of the Microsoft Office Product Group, "The agent applies edits in the document through a purpose-built insertion algorithm to drive consistency regardless of how each edit was introduced."

The redlining engine reads the full structure of a Word document, not just the visible text. It processes formatting, lists, tables, and tracked changes, then applies what Microsoft calls a deterministic resolution layer. This approach is designed to reduce errors, lower processing costs, and speed up output.

Built With Legal Teams

Microsoft built the Legal Agent in direct collaboration with legal engineers. The design follows established contract review processes, including structured, repeatable workflows that legal teams rely on for risk evaluation.

Chauhan added that the agent "understands and structures Microsoft 365 document format into a representation that preserves formatting, lists, tables, and tracked changes." Each suggestion comes with citations that link directly to the source language in the document, so reviewers can verify responses without searching manually.

The agent runs within Microsoft 365 security, compliance, and governance controls. This means organizations do not need to move sensitive legal documents outside their existing infrastructure to use it.

Early Access and Availability

The Legal Agent is available today through Microsoft's Frontier program, which provides early access to new AI features. It runs in Word on Windows desktop and is currently available only in the United States.

Users access the agent through the agents dropdown menu within Copilot in Word. No separate installation is required, though Microsoft notes that users may need to restart Word for the agent to appear.

Early feedback from legal professionals has focused on the agent's ability to work with tracked changes, inspect citations, and review documents against internal playbooks while keeping the reviewer in control of every decision. Microsoft has not published specific adoption or usage figures from this early access period.
