Midpage Taps Into Claude to Upgrade Legal Research

Midpage launches a direct connection to Claude, giving lawyers verified case law access straight from Anthropic's AI platform.

The move comes as law firms increasingly rely on general-purpose AI tools for daily legal work, and as the global legal tech market grows at 9.2% year over year. Midpage built the connection using MCP, an open protocol that lets external tools plug into AI systems without a formal partnership agreement.

Law firms already spend heavily on AI. Legal tech spending at U.S. firms grew 9.7% in 2025, the fastest real growth the industry has recorded, according to a joint report by Thomson Reuters and Georgetown Law. Nearly 72% of legal teams have integrated automation into their workflows, and 67% have shifted toward AI-driven research tools.

Yet a core problem remains: general AI tools cannot reliably access or verify case law on their own. When Claude searches the web to answer a legal question, it can only reach a fraction of the case law that exists. The results it finds are often outdated or poorly organized. Midpage's integration directly targets this gap by connecting Claude to a comprehensive, up-to-date database with verified sources.

How It Works

MCP stands for Model Context Protocol. It is an open standard that allows AI tools to connect to external databases and services. Through this connection, Claude can now run search queries directly over Midpage's case law database. The dataset includes an AI-powered citator, which is a tool that confirms whether a legal case is still valid and can be cited in court.

Once connected, lawyers can use Claude to perform several legal tasks. They can answer research questions, draft memos and briefs, link facts from their Claude projects to relevant case law, review and cite-check briefs from opposing counsel, and brainstorm legal strategies. All of this happens inside the Claude desktop application or browser, without switching to a separate tool.

To use the integration, a lawyer needs two things: an active Midpage subscription and a Claude Pro, Team, or Enterprise plan. Anthropic confirmed that this integration is not an official partnership. Midpage built it independently using the open MCP protocol.

AI hallucination, the tendency of language models to produce false or fabricated information, is a well-documented risk in legal work. A lawyer who cites a case that does not exist could face serious professional consequences. This is one of the core reasons Midpage built the integration.

Midpage CEO Otto von Zastrow addressed this directly. He said: "One of the key advantages of adding our database to Claude is that instead of hallucinating cases, it has access to cases that are real, citable, hyperlinked, and comprehensive."

The citator built into Midpage's database adds another layer of reliability. It flags cases that have been overruled or questioned, so a lawyer can verify a source before including it in a filing or brief. Von Zastrow also noted that, as with any legal work product, lawyers should still review the results themselves before relying on them.

Security and Expansion

Both Anthropic and Midpage hold SOC 2 compliance certifications, a security standard required by most enterprise law firms. Von Zastrow confirmed that Midpage cannot access documents users upload to Claude, nor can it see the full questions and answers exchanged within the platform. Midpage can observe which cases and searches are made, but this data is not used for training and is not stored.

Von Zastrow also signaled that Midpage intends to move beyond Claude. He stated: "ChatGPT is coming soon, and we intend to bring this to all platforms."

This positions MCP integrations as a broader business strategy for Midpage, not a single product decision tied to one AI provider.

Anthropic launched its own legal plugin for Claude CoWork around the same time. However, Midpage noted that this plugin does not connect to a case law database. It is designed for compliance and transactional work, not for deep legal research. The two products serve different purposes and do not overlap directly.

The global legal tech market reached $30.4 billion in 2025 and is projected to reach $73.3 billion by 2035. Midpage, which has raised $6.2 million in total funding, is positioning itself as a complement to AI platforms rather than a competitor. The company frames the Claude integration as a way to stay relevant as law firms consolidate their tools around a smaller number of general-purpose AI systems. As firms move toward fewer tools that do more, specialized providers like Midpage are choosing to work inside those systems rather than stand alone.
