Opensity Solutions has launched a dedicated law firm Management Services Organization practice and hired veteran legal operations executive Rob Morris to run it, the Chicago-based company said Monday. The move positions Opensity to capitalize on a growing appetite among law firms for outsourcing back-office and business functions, a model long established in healthcare that is now gaining traction in legal services.
The MSO concept is straightforward: extract the operational machinery of a law firm, IT, billing, facilities, document processing, marketing, and records management into a separate entity that can invest, modernize, and operate at scale. The model frees law firm partners to focus on client work while creating a vehicle for outside capital to fund technology upgrades and process improvements. In healthcare, physician practice management organizations have operated this way for decades. In legal, the structure remains unfamiliar to most firm leaders, even as competitive pressures from AI-driven tools, alternative legal service providers, and aggressive client demands on pricing have made operational efficiency a survival issue rather than a nice-to-have.
