Relativity Aquires Gavel to Bring Legal AI Into Word

Relativity has acquired Gavel, an AI-native legal technology company, to extend its legal data intelligence platform directly into Microsoft Word.

This deal matters because it could close a long-standing gap between legal data platforms and the documents lawyers actually produce. Motions, briefs, and contracts have historically stayed separate from the data and context behind them, and this acquisition aims to connect the two.

The Deal

Relativity announced the acquisition on June 12, 2026. Gavel's solutions are currently used by thousands of legal professionals to draft, review, and automate legal work product.

The Gavel team will join Relativity, bringing expertise in AI-native drafting, document automation and the Microsoft Word experience. Relativity plans to maintain Gavel's regular operations while integrating its capabilities into RelativityOne over time.

Why It Matters

RelativityOne serves as the platform where legal teams organize, analyze and act on evidence in their matters. Until now, the documents that result from that work have remained separate in Microsoft Word.

With the Gavel integration, work product created in RelativityOne and Relativity aiR could be opened, drafted, edited, redlined and finalized inside Word. Every edit could sync back to the matter in RelativityOne.

Gavel's Background

Gavel was founded by Dorna Moini, a former associate at Sidley Austin LLP. She started by building document automation tools for pro bono clients before growing Gavel into an AI-native platform used by legal teams worldwide.

Pierre Martin, Gavel's Chief Technology Officer, joined the company in 2022. He previously held leadership and executive roles at Microsoft, Amazon and several high-growth startups.

Law firms and organizations across 28 countries use Gavel to draft, edit and automate legal work product. The platform combines generative AI with rules-based workflows for drafting, contract review, redlining and analysis grounded in legal norms and playbooks.

What Changes for Users

Work product generated by Relativity aiR for Case Strategy and aiR Assist could become editable directly in Microsoft Word. This would let lawyers refine documents, route them for comments and redlines, and finalize them within their existing workflow.

Chris Brown, Chief Product Officer at Relativity, said that with Gavel, drafting and collaboration happen directly in Microsoft Word. He noted that once integrated with RelativityOne, that work could happen against the full context of the matter, with edits syncing back to the platform.

Relativity's immediate focus is on integration and continuity for existing customers of both companies. The company has not specified a timeline for full integration of Gavel's capabilities into RelativityOne.
