RELX to Acquire French Legal AI Firm Doctrine

RELX Group announced that it will acquire Doctrine, a Paris-based legal AI platform serving 27,000 legal professionals across Europe.

RELX Group, the parent company of LexisNexis Legal and Professional, has agreed to acquire Doctrine, a French legal technology company founded in 2016. The deal, announced in Paris and New York on April 28, 2026, aims to expand LexisNexis's legal AI workflow capabilities across France, Germany, Spain, and Italy. The acquisition is driven by RELX's goal to deliver stronger legal research and drafting tools to professionals across civil law jurisdictions in Europe.

This move signals a major consolidation in European legal technology, where demand for AI-powered legal research and drafting tools is growing rapidly among law firms, corporations, and public institutions.

The Deal

RELX Group has not disclosed the financial terms of the transaction. The proposed acquisition remains subject to applicable employee consultation procedures and regulatory approvals. Both companies will continue to operate independently until the process is complete.

RELX is a global provider of information-based analytics and decision tools. It employs more than 37,000 people and serves customers in more than 180 countries. The company's total market capitalization stands at approximately $64.4 billion, or £ 47.7 billion.

About Doctrine

Doctrine was founded in 2016 and is headquartered in Paris. The platform combines a large corpus of case law, legislation, and regulatory content for civil law jurisdictions with AI-powered tools for legal research, drafting, and analytics.

Its two primary products, Flow Litigate and Flow Counsel, support daily workflows for legal professionals. The platform currently serves 27,000 users across France, Italy, Germany, and Spain. Its customer base includes solo practitioners, top-tier Anglo-American law firms, multinational corporations, and public entities such as French ministries, local authorities, and universities.

Why This Matters

LexisNexis already has a long history in the French market. The company has owned JurisClasseur, a major French legal publication, since 1993. This acquisition would directly extend that presence by adding a modern AI-native platform built for civil law markets.

Sean Fitzpatrick, Chief Executive Officer of Global Legal at LexisNexis Legal and Professional, said: "We are excited about the prospect of welcoming Doctrine, so that we can serve customers in France, across Europe, and beyond in even greater ways. Doctrine's customer-centric innovation approach, powerful platform, and expert talent, complement LexisNexis's global capabilities in authoritative legal AI workflow solutions."

Guillaume Carrere, Chief Executive Officer of Doctrine, stated: "From the start, we have been obsessed with one thing: building cutting-edge AI solutions for legal professionals across Europe. Joining RELX is the natural next chapter for that mission. LexisNexis brings unparalleled depth of content, global reach and a shared conviction that AI, applied responsibly, will transform how legal work gets done."
