Spellbook Brings AI Contract Review Directly Into Google Docs

Spellbook has embedded its AI contract review and drafting tools directly into Google Docs, a move that sidelines the legal industry’s longstanding dependence on Microsoft Word for transactional work. The integration, announced on July 23, 2026, provides more than a billion Google Docs users with native access to automated redlining, playbook enforcement, and cited legal quotes, without the need to export files or switch applications.

The launch lands at a moment when Google Workspace is quietly eroding Microsoft’s grip on legal infrastructure. Corporate legal departments and midsize firms, frustrated by the cost and complexity of Microsoft 365 licensing, have increasingly adopted Google Docs for everyday drafting.
