Syntracts Secures $5.3M Seed for On-Prem Contract AI

Syntracts raised $5.3 million in seed funding led by Hyperplane to scale its on-premises contract AI platform that structures legal data while keeping information secure within firms' systems.

The Washington, D.C.-based company announced the funding round on October 21, 2025, with participation from Khosla Ventures, Top Harvest Capital, Fortitude Ventures, Myriad Venture Partners, and Point72 Ventures. Syntracts provides law firms and corporate legal teams with an API-first infrastructure layer that integrates with existing workflows and AI tools without sending data to external servers.

Legal AI adoption has grown rapidly, but firms face persistent concerns about data privacy and output accuracy. Syntracts addresses these issues by running entirely on client premises using custom-trained models built from each firm's own documents. The platform cuts contract review time by 80 percent while maintaining full data control, according to the company.

Technology Approach

Syntracts uses fine-tuned small language models trained on synthetic legal data rather than relying on large language model prompting. The system trains thousands of specialized models, each focused on specific contract sections and legal language patterns. Through its API, firms pull documents from systems like iManage, NetDocs, or SharePoint, organize them into structured data, and send results back into existing tools without data leaving their environment.

Doug Bemis, co-founder and former CTO at Uber AI Labs, said: "Firms don't need another app — they need a secure data layer that powers their existing AI with clean, structured knowledge from their own contracts."

The platform achieves above 90 percent accuracy out of the box and improves to 95 percent or higher as it trains on firm-specific documents, according to the company.

Market Traction

Syntracts secured multi-year partnerships with AmLaw 25 firms following competitive evaluations. The company was selected for A&O Shearman's Fuse incubator. Co-founder Christopher Martin, a former Latham & Watkins attorney, said: "We're building the secure AI backbone for the legal industry — one that helps firms unlock the full value of their data safely and at scale."

John Murphy, co-founder and managing partner at Hyperplane, noted: "What excites us about Syntracts is their approach to solving this through small, specialized language models trained on proprietary synthetic data."

Funding Use

The seed funding will support technology development and customer acquisition. The company plans to expand its machine learning implementation team and add account management, sales, and support staff to handle increased customer demand.
