Thomson Reuters Launches AI-Powered Legal Workflows

Thomson Reuters unveiled three new artificial intelligence capabilities for CoCounsel Legal on November 5, 2025, designed to automate complex legal tasks and accelerate document review processes.

The Toronto-based global content and technology company announced the beta releases at its SYNERGY 2025 Legal Professionals conference. The new features include agentic workflows that execute multi-step legal tasks independently, customizable workflow plans for practice groups, and bulk document review of up to 10,000 documents. These capabilities represent Thomson Reuters' expansion into next-generation agentic AI frameworks for legal professionals.

Legal professionals spend significant time on document-intensive tasks like litigation discovery, M&A due diligence, and contract analysis. The new CoCounsel capabilities address these time-consuming workflows by automating complex processes that traditionally require manual review and execution.

Bulk Document Review

The bulk document review beta allows users to upload large document collections and receive organized, sortable results in table format. The system can analyze up to 10,000 documents per review cycle.

The feature targets four critical workflows: litigation discovery, M&A due diligence, regulatory compliance reviews, and contract analysis. Results include structured analysis tools that enable filtering and sorting to identify key information across document sets.

Two-Phase Workflow System

CoCounsel's custom workflow capabilities will roll out in two phases. In phase one, the system will independently plan and execute complex, multi-step legal workflows based on simple prompts from users.

The system uses Thomson Reuters' Westlaw and Practical Law content alongside firm-specific institutional knowledge. Phase two will introduce a workflow builder that allows legal professionals to create, save, and share custom workflows within their organizations.

Institutional Knowledge Capture

The workflow builder enables law firms to develop repeatable, firm-specific processes. Teams can share workflows across practice groups, ensuring consistency and capturing institutional knowledge and best practices.

"They enable legal professionals to move beyond pre-built solutions to create personalized, repeatable workflows where CoCounsel autonomously plans and executes the requisite steps using our solutions and authoritative content."

Rollout Timeline

The new features are being introduced through early beta programs and will become available over the coming months. Additional enhancements to Thomson Reuters legal solutions, including Deep Research, Litigation Document Analyzer, and new Practical Law guided workflows, will roll out to customers starting November 2025.

Thomson Reuters will showcase these capabilities at the SYNERGY 2025 Legal Professionals conference in Orlando, Florida, from November 9-12, 2025.
