LEGAL AI
What a funding squeeze would mean for legal tech buyers and vendors
When a law firm or legal department adopts a platform, it takes on an exposure to that vendor's finances that rarely features in the evaluation. Contract review, matter data, drafting workflows and the AI features built into them all depend on a company that must keep raising money or keep generating it. In a generous funding market that dependency is easy to overlook. In a tighter one it shapes pricing, roadmaps, ownership and, in some cases, whether the product continues at all.
Legal tech is currently showing signs of both. Harvey raised $550 million at a $15.5 billion valuation on 9 September. Six weeks later, Legora raised $550 million at $8.8 billion, up from $5.6 billion at its previous round. Over the same period AI stocks had a difficult October, with the Nasdaq 100 reported to have lost around $2 trillion in value. Whether public markets are signalling a wider correction is unresolved. What is already clear is that private capital in legal tech is flowing to very few companies, and buyers will feel the effects through the vendors they rely on, whichever way public markets move.
