Willkie Partners With OpenAI for Firmwide ChatGPT Enterprise Rollout, Proprietary AI Build

Willkie Farr & Gallagher has entered into a collaboration with OpenAI, which includes a firm-wide deployment of ChatGPT Enterprise and access to the company's frontier models and Codex tooling, the firm announced on Tuesday. The move positions Willkie among the first major international law firms to formalize a direct relationship with OpenAI for both end-user deployment and proprietary platform development.

The partnership arrives as the Am Law 100 accelerates its AI adoption in two distinct tracks: deploying third-party tools for lawyer productivity, and building bespoke platforms that embed institutional knowledge into client-facing workflows. Willkie has pursued both simultaneously through its internal innovation unit, Willkie Works, which has developed a suite of branded tools under the "Wendell" label, encompassing legal intelligence, financial analytics, professional development, private funds secondaries, and class action claimant support. Few firms outside the top 20 have developed a proprietary AI portfolio at this breadth.

Under the agreement, OpenAI's latest models will power the next generation of the Wendell platform suite, while Codex integration will accelerate how Willkie's AI engineers design and deploy new capabilities. The firm also secured ISO/IEC 42001:2023 certification for its AI management systems, a standard only a handful of law firms have publicly claimed. The OpenAI collaboration sits alongside Willkie's existing arrangements with Harvey as an Innovation Partner and its deployment of LexisNexis Protégé, signaling a deliberate multi-vendor strategy rather than single-provider dependence.
