Wordsmith Enters US Market to Cut Legal Costs

Wordsmith, an AI platform for in-house legal teams, has expanded into the United States this week at Legal Week in New York, targeting the country's $100 billion corporate legal market.

The Edinburgh-founded company aims to reduce enterprise reliance on outside counsel by embedding legal guidance directly into workplace tools. For general counsels managing growing workloads with flat headcount, the timing reflects a structural shift in how companies manage legal operations internally.

The Shadow Legal Problem

Every employee at a company already has access to an AI that will answer legal questions instantly, with no knowledge of their organisation's contracts, standards, or risk position. Legal teams call this shadow legal: employees getting legal guidance from general AI tools that have no grounding in a company-specific context.
