PointOne, a legal technology company, raised $16 million in a Series A round led by 8VC on to expand its AI-powered time entry and billing platform for law firms.
The round matters because law firms have long relied on broken time-tracking tools, and inaccurate time data directly hurts their pricing, staffing, and profitability. PointOne addresses a structural problem that has persisted across the industry for decades.
The Funding Round
8VC led the Series A. Bessemer Venture Partners, General Catalyst, Y Combinator, and existing investors also participated. The round brings PointOne's total funding to $20 million.
The company plans to use the capital to deepen its work with current customers and hire for key roles. It aims to expand its platform without slowing the pace of development.
The Problem It Solves
Law firms track billable hours as the basis for nearly every financial decision they make. For years, the tools used to capture that data have been unreliable, leaving firms with incomplete records and downstream errors in billing and profitability analysis.
PointOne automates time entry using AI so that every billable hour gets recorded and the underlying data stays accurate from the start. Accurate time data allows firms to price work more defensibly and make informed staffing decisions.
Co-founder and CTO Jeremy said: "When we looked at the tools law firms were using to manage their most valuable asset, we couldn't believe what we saw. We built PointOne because we knew the industry deserved infrastructure that actually works."
What the Platform Does
Beyond automated time entry, PointOne has built intelligent bill review, Outside Counsel Guidelines compliance tools, and pricing intelligence features. Outside Counsel Guidelines (OCG) are billing rules that corporate clients impose on their law firms, and non-compliance can result in write-downs or rejected invoices.
The company positions timekeeping as the foundation of a broader data strategy for law firms. Its platform is designed to help firms not only solve current billing problems but also build long-term data infrastructure.
In the six months before the funding announcement, PointOne grew revenue 10 times over. The platform now serves firms ranging from boutique practices to some of the largest law firms in the world.
Company Growth
PointOne was founded three years ago by two engineers. A year before this announcement, the team had four people. Today the company has just under twenty employees.
Co-founder and CEO Katon Luaces said the company intends to stay lean and continue building in close collaboration with its customers. The team plans to hire selectively for roles that support current demand without expanding headcount broadly.
The company was founded on the belief that a purpose-built AI infrastructure for law firms could change how legal practices manage their economics. That focus on the legal sector specifically, rather than a general-purpose approach, has shaped both the product and the pace of adoption.
