Wordsmith and PERSUIT Link In-House AI Work to External Market Pricing
Share article

Wordsmith and PERSUIT announced a partnership Wednesday that, for the first time, attaches a market-rate dollar value to legal work completed inside a company — work that has historically carried no price tag at all. The integration connects Wordsmith's in-house legal workflow platform with PERSUIT's external legal spend database, letting general counsel see the cost of both paths before choosing one. The timing is pointed: as AI expands what in-house teams can absorb, the calculus around outsourcing has shifted, but most legal departments still lack the data to reprice it.
The make-or-buy question has shadowed legal operations for years. In-house teams have long justified headcount and tooling by pointing to avoided outside counsel spend, but the argument rested on estimates, not evidence. PERSUIT's position in that gap is unusual: the platform sits on more than $25 billion in real law firm proposal data spanning 16,000 matters and 50,000 submissions, and counts SAP, IBM, Mastercard, and Heineken among its users. Wordsmith, backed by Index Ventures and General Catalyst with more than $100 million raised, reported revenue growth of more than 14 times in the past year and serves more than 500 in-house teams. The partnership arrives at a moment when enterprise legal buyers are under pressure to demonstrate return, not just restraint.
Mechanically, the integration works across the life of a legal request. Wordsmith captures incoming matters through email, Slack, and Microsoft Teams, routes them against approved playbooks, and resolves routine work through AI agents. When a matter is a candidate for outside counsel, PERSUIT supplies benchmark pricing for that matter type and jurisdiction, along with firm recommendations and comparable fee structures, at the decision point — not after. When Wordsmith resolves a matter internally, PERSUIT can produce a dollar figure representing what comparable work would have cost at a law firm, drawn strictly from real proposals rather than modeled rates. BT Group General Counsel Bruce Breckenridge, whose employer uses both platforms, described the combination as the first tool giving legal teams a joined-up view of the insource-outsource decision. Belron reported more than $400,000 in avoided external spend in the first three months on Wordsmith alone. SAP reached a three-year savings target in nine months using PERSUIT.
Industry Implications
The partnership puts competitive pressure on legal operations platforms that measure efficiency through adoption metrics rather than market-comparable savings — a gap that enterprise buyers and CFOs increasingly notice. It also signals that the next phase of legal AI differentiation will be fought on financial verifiability, not feature lists. Vendors that cannot anchor their efficiency claims to real market data will struggle to hold budget conversations with finance leadership. More broadly, connecting intake, workflow, and pricing intelligence into a single audit trail raises the bar for what a mature legal technology stack looks like — and compresses the window for competitors to build or acquire equivalent data assets.
DreamLegal Perspective
Legal operations leaders should treat this partnership as a benchmark event: any platform claiming to reduce external spend should now be expected to quantify that reduction against real market data, not internal estimates. For vendors, the strategic lesson is that proprietary pricing intelligence — the kind that takes years of transaction volume to accumulate — is becoming a defensible moat in a market where AI capabilities are converging. Watch whether PERSUIT extends the same market-pricing layer to other workflow platforms, as the announcement indicates it intends to; if that opening materializes, it reframes PERSUIT less as an eBilling tool and more as legal AI's shared pricing infrastructure.
