Atlas Cloud Acquires Challow to Expand Legal Tech Services

Atlas Cloud Limited acquired London-based Challow Design Network Services Limited on July 21, 2025, creating a specialized provider for the legal sector.

This acquisition positions Atlas Cloud to capitalize on mandatory Cyber Essentials certifications for legal aid firms starting later this year. The combined entity addresses growing compliance demands in the legal sector following updated 2024 guidance from the Law Society and Bar Council promoting information security culture change.

Strategic Geographic Expansion

Newcastle-based Atlas Cloud targeted Challow's King's Cross location to expand its geographical reach and increase capacity for larger clients. The acquisition brings together Atlas Cloud's operational infrastructure with Challow's compliance-focused IT solutions designed specifically for barristers' chambers and law firms.

Andy Fryer, former Challow director and now Operations Director for the combined group, will oversee the integration. The merger combines two distinct operational focuses: Newcastle as the hub for service and cyber security operations, while London handles technology operations.

Legal Sector Compliance Push

The timing aligns with regulatory changes affecting legal services. Government plans to tighten cyber security across its supply chain will make Cyber Essentials certifications mandatory for all legal aid firms by the end of 2025.

Challow's existing solution already aligns firms and chambers with the UK Government's Cyber Essentials scheme, supporting both traditional partnerships and self-employed barristers. The combined company will offer penetration testing and cyber security accreditations under one service umbrella.

Customer Base Integration

Atlas Cloud's existing legal clients include Ward Hadaway and Thackray Williams. The acquisition adds Challow's customer base, including 7 Bedford Row and Warners Solicitors, expanding the combined entity's presence in the legal services market.

Atlas Cloud has in recent years placed a huge emphasis on developing an operational blueprint that delivers a great service in a scalable way."

Innovation and AI Development

The acquisition occurs two years into Atlas Cloud's five-year strategic plan. The company plans to expand its innovations team to help law firms implement Generative AI solutions and reduce billable hours.

Watson outlined future priorities: "We've invested heavily in perfecting our operational blueprint. Now we're full steam ahead on innovation – the next technological wave will come from the combination of AI and automation; we plan to be ahead of the curve."

The company currently runs innovation roundtables with customers and develops proof of concepts for AI implementation in legal practices.
