BakerHostetler Builds AI Platform Around Firm Data and Clio Partnership

BakerHostetler launched a firm-developed AI platform on Aug. 28, putting proprietary legal knowledge at the center of its technology strategy. The Practice Intelligence Center begins with Matter Research+, a research product built with Clio and connected to the company’s Vincent AI legal assistant. The move gives the firm a controlled layer for applying its own matter information to AI-supported legal work.

The launch reflects a shift in how large law firms are approaching legal technology. Rather than relying exclusively on general-purpose products, firms are increasingly seeking systems that can organize internal work product, matter history and practice-specific expertise. BakerHostetler’s approach combines in-house product development with an outside technology partnership, a model that may allow firms to retain control over sensitive knowledge while avoiding the cost of building every underlying AI capability themselves. The timing also highlights a central problem for enterprise legal buyers: AI tools become more useful when they can draw on firm-specific information, but that information introduces governance, security and quality concerns.
